Madagascar is among the 17th “mega-diverse” countries, thanks to its high concentration of biodiversity; it is included in the very selective list of mega-diverse countries. The majority of the flora and fauna it shelters are almost all endemic.

This tour brings us to discover the flora of Madagascar, which is one of the richest flora in the world. It is estimated that there are between 13,000 and 14,000 species, 80% of which are endemic. Among these 14,000 species we note the BAOBAB species.

Out of the 8 Baobab species existing in the world, 7 species are present in Madagascar, of which 6 are endemic. These are Adansonia grandidieri, A. rubrostipa, A. za, A. madagascariensis, A. perrieri and A. suarezensis. The species A. digitata is well represented in western Madagascar, it is common with Africa.

This circuit is accessible, only from April, until October.

Day 1: Antananarivo

Arrival at Ivato International Airport, reception and transfer to the hotel. Even if Madagascar is in the southern hemisphere and everyone thinks it is very hot, on the contrary, in winter, it is cold on the highlands: the temperature drops to 6 ° C.

The Zamilane tours team will accompany you to your hotel and inform you about everything you need to do during your stay in Madagascar.

Day 2: Antananarivo – Antsirabe- Miandrivazo

You leave Antananarivo early, to have lots of time to understand the Malagasy know-how, their daily life, the styles of their houses….

The Malagasy are poor, but they manage to survive instead of begging from tourists or the wealthy. As soon as you leave Antananarivo, you can observe the bricklayers mixing the clays of the rice field to make bricks; if they bake them in an oven that they invented themselves. You continue south, passing by the famous RN7, lined with Euphorbia milis plants or the “thorn of Christ” plant, pines that were introduced to Madagascar during the colonial era. After 30 km from Antananarivo, you stop at a small stand in Raphia where the association of women gathers to collect fibers from Raphia (palm plant endemic to Madagascar), in order to weave hats, baskets, models of chameleons, lemurs: this is the only place to buy objects in Raffia.

Second stop is Ambatolampy. It is a mountainous city located at an altitude of 1600 m above sea level. This city is famous for the talents of young locals for building aluminum objects. You are going to visit their workshops, and when you leave their worksites: you are going to ask yourself the question, where does this talent come from?

After visiting Ambatolampy, you still have 2 hours to reach Antsirabe to admire the beautiful landscape: the terraced crops, the styles of the traditional house, the stone tombs, the small rabbit sales stands

After lunch, you still have 220km to go to Miandrivazo. Departure from Antsirabe at 1500m altitude, arrival at Miandrivazo, 10 to 5m altitude: for your information, it is very hot in Miandrivazo, whether in winter or summer.

Day3: Miandrivazo – Morondava- kirindy reserve

To take advantage of observing the rhythm of life of the local population between Miandrivazo and Morondava, it is better to leave early because it is the moment when the sun is not too harsh and the local population takes the opportunity to go in the fields to plow the land, seek water, go fishing on the Mahajilo and Tsiribihina rivers. The landscape is changing, there are not a lot of vegetation, apart from the xerophytic plants that support drought, mango trees, palm trees, pig grasses…. After the fork towards Malaimbandy, you will discover a green landscape, thanks to water resources supplying the rice fields of the local population.

Lunch by the Mozambique Channel.

You continue your road towards the north of the town of Morondava, via the RN8; you pass avenue des Baobabs for the first time: go down and touch them for the first time.

Towards the end of the afternoon, you arrive at your hotel, surrounded by nature. You leave your luggage in the hotel, you place the order for your evening meal and you leave for the night tour to explore other species such as: nocturnal lemur, the famous lemur predator, the “Fossa or Cryptoprocta ferox….

Day 4: Reserve kirindy – Morondava

Departure for the daytime visit of the Kirindy reserve. The Kirindy forest reserve is located 70km from Morondava. It is distinguished by its significant richness in flora (medicinal plants, trees with precious woods, baobabs …) with high endemicity rates.

The Kirindy forest also makes it possible to observe very closely and without any danger, different types of animal species: lemurs, Cryptoprocta ferox or fossa, 6 species of nocturnal lemurs, Vositse (giant rat), a local endemic species , snakes… .

After visiting the reserve, return to the restaurant for lunch.

In the afternoon, direction towards Morondava. Visit the baobab lover, then wait for the wonderful sunset on the Baobab alley, before returning to the hotel.

Day 5: Morondava / Belo sur mer

We take a red dirt track with an arid landscape of dry “bush” forest, crossing several rivers, passable only by 4 * 4 car. Arrival towards the end of the day on the coast, in the village of Belo sur Mer. Free lunch. In the afternoon, visit the village and the craftsmen who make wooden boats “Botry”, the typical local boat; possibility of a canoe trip in Belo Bay to observe a vast Mangrove forest.

Day 6: Belo sur mer – Manja.

Departure from Belo in the morning, depending on the tide or in the afternoon to avoid wasting a lot of time by going to the salt works in Antsirasira. Picnic lunch.

Arriving in Manja, you settle into the hotel, and if the weather permits, you can take a short tour of the city of Manja. It should be noted that Manja is not a tourist destination, but to have time to admire the beautiful landscapes between Manja and Andavadoaka, it is better to spend the night there.

Day 7: Manja – Andavadoaka

Breakfast at the hotel ; the journey continues via the long track which crosses the tropical forest, where you can observe Baobabs, typical animals such as the iguana, Uroplatus, … free lunch (picnic advised).

At the end of the afternoon, arrived in Andavadoaka, a village of the Vezo tribe, fishermen on the Mozambique Channel.

Eighth day: transfer to Ambatomilo

Transfer to Ambatomilo to admire the most beautiful beach opposite the Mozambique Channel.

In the morning, departure to reach Ambolomailaka: throughout the journey along the Mozambique Channel, you will see the beautiful extraordinary landscape of the West, a panoramic view …

Day 10: Ambolomailaka

After breakfast, visit the local Renala reserve, where we find medicinal plants, typical of the region, flora and fauna, thorny forest. The emblem of this small reserve is the presence of a species of baobab Adansonia rubrostipa with several different forms.

In the afternoon, visit villages and meet local fishermen and artisans. We will have the opportunity to take a cart ride, pulled by zebus.

Day 11: Relax on the beach face to Mozambic chanel

During the free day, there are several activities to complete the day; massage by the sea, snorkeling, boat ride, etc.

Swimming in the Mozambique Channel, sailing boat trip to see the immensity of Africa’s largest barrier reef and its importance.

Day 12: Ambolomailaka– Toliara – Antananarivo

Return to Antananarivo by domestic flight. Checked baggage 20 kg, hand baggage 5 kg.

Arrival in Antananarivo, transfer to the hotel or visit of the upper town it depends on the arrival in Antananarivo.

Day 13: Palace of King Ambohimanga

After breakfast, departure for the visit of King Andrianampoinimerina’s palace in Ambohimanga or blue hill. This hill is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. It is made up of a royal city, a royal funerary site and a set of sacred places.

In the afternoon, discover the dike market. It is a craft market where you can buy small souvenirs of Madagascar before returning.

Day use at the hotel and after dinner, transfer to the airport.
