The National Route N ° 7 is a name used for several routes in the world. More than 23 countries use this name for their roads, including Madagascar and France. The national route 7, or RN 7, or even N 7, sometimes also called the “Blue route” or even the “holiday route”, was the longest of the national routes of France, with 996 km. As for Madagascar, the national road 7 crosses many regions and tribes of the capital in the southwest of Madagascar, with 950km, and this is the reason why the French, at the beginning of colonization in 1897, after having drawn up the plan of urbanization in Madagascar, have decided to name this road “the RN7”, because it resembles the N7 at home in France. The famous RN7 in Madagascar is the holiday route for tourists, during all seasons, thanks to its specificities in terms of harmonious landscapes, national and natural parks, natural monuments, the different tribes that rub shoulders with this route to Toliara .

Day 1: Antananarivo

Antananarivo or Antananarivo (in Malagasy: the “village of a thousand”, at the origin of the Merina kingdom; it was mainly a question of village and not of city, “Antananarivo” being the French name during the colonial period) is the political capital of Madagascar, the province of Antananarivo and the Analamanga region, located in the central part of the island. Its inhabitants are called Antananariviens. Its urban area approaches 3,209,993 inhabitants in 2019. The city is divided into six districts and 192 fokontany.

Day 2 : Antananarivo – Antsirabe

Departing from Antananarivo after breakfast, we pass through the heart of the capital to join the famous RN7. We directly observe the people of the highlands, cosmopolitan dominated by the Merina. They get up early in the morning to go to markets, fields and offices for those who are bureaucrats. A mountainous city from 1240 to 1440 m above sea level, very lively. On the outskirts of the city, we observe bricklayers mixing clay to make bricks, tiles and other uses.

30 km from the city, on the RN7, we stop to visit a small workshop of objects in Raffia.

70km from the capital, we enter the city of Ambatolampy. City located at the foot of the third highest peak in Madagascar. This city has its specificity, thanks to the manufacture of aluminum objects. Taking advantage of the existence of local raw materials, the young people of Ambatolampy can build various aluminum materials.

We continue towards Antsirabe, admiring the beautiful landscapes of the high plateaus: terrace crops of rice, corn, various vegetables, barley….

After lunch, we proceed to visit the first hotel in Madagascar, the “Hotel des Thermes” which was built in 1897, and still in use until now. Not far from Independence Avenue is Chez Joseph, which is also very famous for its semi-precious stone workshop. And then we continue to visit the workshop of zebu horns and the workshop of miniature objects at Mamy, which are located side by side. To end your day, rickshaw tours in the city center.

Day 3: Antsirabe – Ranomafana

Departure to the south to explore new landscapes.

Just 20km from the city, we meet young cyclists who transport charcoal for sale from their village to the city of Antsirabe. Arriving at the village of Manandona, weather permitting, we will visit the local village, their house and the base of their daily life.

Arrival at Ambositra around 11 a.m. Ambositra is the capital of the Zafimaniry tribe, a tribe very famous for their skill in carving wood. Stop for a visit to the stationery workshop: demonstration and visit of the finished products. This is the only place to buy wooden items.

Lunch at Ambositra, and then we continue to Ranomafana.

Day 4: Ranomafana – Ambalavao

Early morning departure for a visit to Ranomafana Park. Ranomafana National Park is a Madagascan park located in the province of Fianarantsoa. It was created in 1991. It was included in 2007 in the Atsinanana wetland World Heritage site.

The park covers just over 41,600 ha of tropical rain forest. There are several rare animal and plant species such as lemurs and Fanaloka, giraffe insects….

After the park, we resume our famous RN7 road, lunch stop in Fianarantsoa. In the afternoon, visit the upper town at Fianarantsoa, ​​a town founded in 1831 by Queen Ranavalona I, to make it the capital of the southern part of the island. The hill of Kianjasoa was the first site chosen, but the new town, named Fianarantsoa, ​​was finally built on the neighboring hill, Ivoneana, which is much more protected. The first governor of Fianarantsoa is Rafaralahindraininaly who ruled from 1831 to 1842.

We continue to the Southwest; towards the end of the afternoon, we arrive in Ambalavao.

Five 5: Ambalavao – Isalo Park

Departure from the hotel in the morning to visit the wild silk workshop at “Soa Landy”. It is a small workshop that treats the cocoons of wild silkworms that live symbiotically on the leaves of Tapia. Then visit Antemoro paper workshop at Bougainvilliers.

After the various visits to downtown Ambalavao, we continue the road to Anja Park. It is a small park managed by the COBA (Grassroots Community) thanks to the existence of a species of lemur which lives there, it is a Maki catta. It’s a great place to see lemurs, chameleons and sometimes snakes.

After lunch, we will dive entirely in the southern part of Madagascar. The landscapes change, the vegetation is rare, the Zebus are numerous, because we arrive in the territory, where people do not plant much rice but are rather breeders of zebus.

At the end of the afternoon, we arrive at the village of RANOHIRA, an ecotourism village which is located at the entrance to the Isalo National Park.

Day 6: Isalo Park

We have a full day to explore the beauty of Isalo Park. The Isalo National Park is a protected area of ​​Madagascar, declared a national park in 1999.

It is a mountain range of Jurassic sandstone, stretching for almost a hundred kilometers, in a north-south direction, and cut by deep canyons and bristling with peaks.

Isalo National Park covers an area of ​​81,540 ha, stretching for almost one hundred kilometers, in a north-south direction. The erosion of the rock has carved a ruiniform relief, varying from 820 to 1240m above sea level, with deep canyons, rivers, and abundant rocky vegetation. The park is also home to lemurs and other lemurs.

During your stay at Isalo, the morning is dedicated to hiking to the natural swimming pool. This is a time to know the rites of the Bara tribe, during the burial, and also see their provisional and final tombs, and in the afternoon, hike in the canyon, to the blue and black pool. Possibility to see the sifaka or the lemur dancer and the maki catta.

Day 7: Isalo Park – Mangily (Ifaty)

Abandoning the chaotic and canonical landscape of Isalo, new discoveries await us along the way.

A sapphire village, animated in the morning by the sale of precious stones and possibility of visit, accompanied by the owner of the quarry. We can see all the types of existing stones in the region, presented by the “GEMS” said transparent stone from where the majority of buyers are Filipinos.

Only a few km away, in the middle of the arid landscape, is a National Park called Zombitse Vohibasia. A park made up of dry forest, it is an exceptional site of avifauna and xerophilic flora.

Seen from afar, the mother of the forest or baobabs decorate the landscapes with these large and long trunks, from where the leaves are rare and it gives it the air of the tree upside down.

At the end of the morning, Lunch in the city of Toliara, passing through the Mahafaly plateaus with its spectacular, colorful tombs, interpreting the life of the deceased. This is the city called “Tsy miroro”, the sunny city where we meet Vezo.

The afternoon is reserved to reach the beautiful Mangily beach protected by the great coral reef, and it is finally the opportunity to taste seafood, after having made the long circuit of the highlands.

Day 8: Mangily – Beach

After breakfast, visit the local Renala reserve, with medicinal plants typical of the region and the fauna and flora of the thorny forest. The emblem of this small reserve is the presence of a species of baobab Adansonia rubrostipa with several different forms.

In the afternoon, visit and meet fishing villages and local artisans. We will have the opportunity to take a cart ride, pulled by zebus.

Day 9: Relaxing at the beach

During the free day, there are several activities to complete the day; massage by the sea, snorkeling, boat ride, etc.

Day 10: Mangily – Toliara – Antananarivo

Day 11: Palace of King Ambohimanga

After breakfast, departure for the visit of King Andrianampoinimerina’s palace in Ambohimanga or blue hill. This hill is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. It consists of a royal city, a royal funerary site and a set of sacred places.

In the afternoon, discover the dike market. It is a craft market where you can buy small souvenirs of Madagascar before returning.
