The wonder of the east cost 12 days

 Sainte Marie Island is between 60 ° 40 and 17 ° 80 south latitude, between 49 ° 8 and 50 ° 55 east longitude. It extends parallel to the east coast of Madagascar, separated by a narrow 7km canal between Pointe à Larrée and Loukintsy, and 35 km between Soanierana-Ivongo and Ambodifotatra.

Its total length is 60 km, and its greatest width is around 5 km. Its highest peak, Davolagna, is 114m.

This island appears as an exclamation point and the point is the île aux Nattes. The Île aux Nattes, or locally called “AGNIRIBE”, is a very small island placed at the bottom of another long island, called Île Sainte Marie, like an exclamation point, a few kilometers off an immense island: Madagascar.

Ile aux  Nattes is a paradise island of 6km2, with 100% fine white sand, a crystal clear sea, protected by a coral reef. It’s a place where there is no electricity, no car. It’s a good place to relax.

As for the Pangalanes Canal, it is a canal in eastern Madagascar, built in the 20th century. Almost 700 kilometers long, it connects Farafangana to Tamatave, the port city constituting its outlet.

This tour allows you to admire the beautiful fauna, flora and landscapes of Sainte-Marie Island and the Pangalanes Canal.

This circuit can be done, vice versa: from Antananarivo to Sainte-Marie or Sainte-Marie to Antananarivo.

Day 1 : Antananarivo

Day 1 : Antananarivo

Arrival at Ivato International Airport, reception and transfer to the hotel. You are going to spend a night in Antananarivo: this is the local name of this city but the French translated into French during colonial times “Tananarive” that has nothing the same meaning of Antananarivo. This is the city of the 2 CV Citroën, Renault 4L and Peugeot 305 cars which are still in operation to this day.

Day 2: Antananarivo – Parc – Andasibe.

As soon as the sun rises, see at dawn, you hear a lot of noise: voice call from Taxi Be receivers, voice call from merchants to attract customers, noise from carts pulled by Zebus…. Don’t worry about it because it’s the daily life in Madagascar. Malagasy get up early and go to bed early.

After breakfast, you head east, crossing the city, until you reach the famous “NATIONAL ROUTE 2: RN2”. From there, you count 75 km for the first stop and visit the reptile reserve at Peyrieras. It is a small reserve where you can see, nearby, different types of chameleons, the largest of which is the Parsonnii chameleon “Calumma Parsonnii”, different types of gecko uroplatis, endemic to Madagascar, snakes, frogs, bats and butterflies … The visit lasts approximately 45 minutes.

After the visit, you continue towards the Andasibe park. Lunch on the way and in the afternoon, visit an island of lemurs in the famous vakona reserve, located about 7km from the village of Andasibe. During this visit, you will discover and even touch the soft fluff of these lemurs. In this small reserve, you will see the species of lemurs, such as: Eulemur fulvus (tawny lemur), varecia variegata (Black and white maki), varecia rubra (Red maki), Sifaka (Dancer lemur), Hapalemur griseus (Little lemur bamboo)…

At the end of the afternoon, dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 3 :  Andasibe Park – Ankaninofy

After breakfast at the hotel, you will visit the national park managed by Madagascar National Parc, for a duration of 3 hours. It is the second most visited park after Isalo Park. Andasibe Park has two separate reserves: the Mantadia Reserve and the Analamazaotra Reserve. The tourist attraction of Andasibe Périnet remains the observation of lemurs, orchids and birds. This is an opportunity to see the largest lemur in Madagascar “Indri indri”, or locally called “Babakoto”, in its natural habitat.

After visiting this park, you continue the road to the famous Pangalanes Canal, with a picnic lunch . At the beginning of the afternoon, you arrive at the edge of the lake “RASOA BE” where you take a boat which will ensure your transfer to the hotel, passing over 3 lakes and a canal including: “Rasoa Be, Rasoa Masay, and Lake Ampitabe. The Pangalanes Canal is the second longest canal in the world, after the Suez Canal, extends north of Fulpointe and south of Mananjary, for around 640km. Due to human activities regarding deforestation, a significant portion of this canal is no longer navigable today. The most chic place in this canal is Ankanin’ny nofy, or the dream nest where you will stay.

Day 4: Ankanin’ny nofy

After breakfast, you proceed to the day tour of the Palmarium reserve. This is a 3 hour tour, during which your local guide introduces you to flora such as: Euphorbia milis, palm species, orchids, pepper and ferns, and especially the carnivorous plant. As for the Fauna, it makes you discover more than 8 species of lemurs which follow you from time to time, because the guide brings with him pieces of bananas. The guide continues to imitate the cries of Lemur, until he finds the largest lemur in Madagascar, the “Indri indri“.

In the afternoon, after lunch, visit the Andranokoditra fishing village.

At the end of the afternoon, you embark again on a boat towards the island Aye aye. This is a special time to discover the largest nocturnal lemur in Madagascar.

Day 5: Ankanin’ny nofy – Toamasina

Toamasina or Tamatave is about sixty kilometers from Ankanin’ny nofy. Departure early in the morning to admire the landscape and the beauty of this canal, with the activities of local people. Along the way, you will find fishermen in the fresh water of the canal, their fishing gear and their fishing techniques that you never imagined.

Around noon, you arrive in Toamasina, the second city of Madagascar with approximately 411,993 inhabitants. It is a very important port city thanks to the existence of the largest port in Madagascar.

In the afternoon, city tour to learn about the history of the city; the door of history: political history, the history of education. City terminus of the TCE rail network (Antananarivo East Coast). During your tour, you cannot fail to admire the largest avenue of independence, bordered by palm trees planted in 1930, and the beloved place, where you can admire the large ficus trees, “Strange Trees”.

Before going to the hotel, take the opportunity to go to the Grand spice market: good quality vanilla, pepper, pink berry, turmeric, nutmeg, etc.

Day 6: Toamasina – Sainte-Marie

Early departure to reach the pier at Soanierana Ivongo to take the boat GASIKARA BE or Mahambo with the boat EL CONDOR. The difference between the two shuttles is that: Gasikara be provides the shuttle Soanierana Ivongo – Sainte-Marie and the duration of the shuttle is 1h30mn, on the other hand, the journey from Toamasina – Soanierana ivongo takes around 4h. As for El condor, their quay is at Mahambo, 70 km from Toamasina, the transfer by car takes only 2 hours. However, by boat, it takes 3 hours.

Seen from afar, the shape of Sainte-Marie Island, protected by a coral reef, bordered by coconut trees: it is a paradise island: “SANTA MARIA”

We arrive at Sainte-Marie Island in the early afternoon, transfer by Tuc tuc to Île aux Nattes, at the southern end of the island.

Dinner and overnight at the hôtel, by the sea, calm and relaxing.

Day 7: Sainte-Marie

Departure for the visit of the historic island: city of the Pirates, city of Queen Betia son of a pirate half-breed, city of the French colonists. Arrival at a good view, fork to the cemetery of pirates, corsairs. Visit the museum of the residence of Queen Betia on the Isle of Madame, passing by the first Catholic church in Madagascar, founded in 1837 by Monsignor Dalmond.

We continue north to the natural pool. The objective is to see the cult site, but if we want to go swimming, it is better to wait for the arrival at the Île aux Mattes, because there the sea is very calm and there is no danger.

Day 8: Sainte-Marie

Day  for whalewatching during whale season, or excursion to the sand islet for snorkeling. According to CETAMADA, there are 11 species of whales coming each year to the Malagasy marine territory to reproduce and give birth to small calves. If you are going to Sainte-Marie Island, out of the whale season from June to the end of September, we suggest the excursion to the sandy island, to the east of the island.

Day 9 – 10: Sainte-Marie

Relax on the beach of the island.

Day 11- 12: Sainte-Marie- Antananarivo

Transfer to Sainte-Marie Island airport. Arrival in Antananarivo, transfer to the hotel.

Twelfth day: King’s Palace on the blue hill

After breakfast, departure for the visit of King Andrianampoinimerina’s palace in Ambohimanga. This hill is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. It is made up of a royal city, a royal funerary site and a set of sacred places.

In the afternoon, discover the traditional  market. It is a craft market where you can buy small souvenirs of Madagascar before returning.

Day use at the hotel, and after dinner, transfer to the airport.
